The 2023 season up to now

by Elisa Cavazza

Just a short time before the 2023 grape harvest starts, we wish to summarize the growing season and we have drawn up a forecast “that wards off bad luck” on what we can expect.

Winter: winter was mild, with low rainfall and we did not experience any problems. Budburst began between the end of March and the beginning of April, as spring was starting.

Spring: Although we had average seasonal temperatures, there was rather heavy rainfall in May and June. We were therefore worried about downy mildew. However, we managed to keep the fungal vine disease in check. Flower clusters appeared normally at the beginning of June.

Summer was an atypical season, compared to spring, as it was very sunny and hot, especially at the end of June/beginning of July. Veraison, now at 50%, will be completed at the beginning of August.

If the season continues its natural course, with the current weather conditions ̶ hot weather alternating with rainfall ̶ we envisage harvesting early-ripening varieties, like Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio), at the end of August.
