30 Sep Environmental sustainability at Cavazza: an important topic which we care deeply about
by Andrea Cavazza
Protecting the territory, tending the vineyards and work in the cellar, but also certifications and continuous improvements: all this demonstrates our great respect for nature, but also for Cavazza customers
Both in the Italian and international wine worlds sustainability is a topical issue and, above all, widely perceived. Wine Advocate, the online magazine of the famous wine critic Robert Parker, which was sold to the Michelin Guide, starting in 2021 has dedicated a new prize to this topic: the Robert Parker Green Emblem Award.
The underlying assumption was explained very well by Parker when the award was first introduced: “To receive this prize, a winery may or may not already be certified organic and/or biodynamic. Beyond the certification, the producer must be a great supporter of sustainability in all respects, including making efforts for the community to ensure long-term environmental protection as well as biodiversity and/or striving to improve broader social impacts of wine production.”
We at Cavazza fully share this notion and for many years now we have been firmly committed to achieving it through our working style. As we are fully aware that every activity, every stage of wine production, even the smallest ̶ both in the vineyard and the winery ̶ have an impact on our territory, we feel highly responsible for taking care of it and respecting it every single day. We have chosen to protect and safeguard the biodiversity that our hills in the Gambellara and Berici districts have bestowed on us, by creating even more areas with vegetation inside our vineyards. We use sustainable viticulture practices that have allowed us to create our personal Cavazza Sustainability Manifesto and in 2019 we obtained the important SQNPI certification (Italian certification system certifying compliance with Integrated Production Standards), recognized by MIPAAF (Ministry for Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies). Certifications are undoubtedly a measurable instrument, but they are somewhat unexciting to demonstrate our commitment: therefore, we look forward to seeing you at our winery so that you can see for yourself everything that we have just talked about here.
